Portable Lighting
Outdoor light that doesn't need an electrician
Plug-in, rechargeable and battery-powered outdoor lighting. For garden tables, patios, covered terraces and anywhere you want light without running cable.
When portable outdoor lighting is the right answer
Hardwired outdoor lighting is the permanent, long-term solution — but it's also an electrician job, a Part P notification, and buried cable runs. Portable outdoor lighting skips all of that. Plug-in, rechargeable or battery-powered fittings deliver outdoor-usable light without any installation work.
The places it actually earns its keep:
Garden dining tables — rechargeable table lamps and lanterns that sit on an outdoor dining table, giving warm light for evening meals without a pendant hanging overhead.
Patios and terraces — portable floor lamps and uplights that light seating areas during entertaining and move indoors for the winter.
Rental and temporary installations — where permanent hardwired lighting isn't an option. Plug-in lights run off a weatherproof outdoor socket.
Seasonal lighting — summer garden parties, Christmas outdoor displays, weekend-home setups that only need to be lit part of the year.
Festoons and decorative strings — plug-in outdoor festoon lights strung across pergolas, fences and trees. Event-level ambience without any install.
Three power types
Mains plug-in — runs off a standard 13A weatherproof outdoor socket. Reliable, bright, no battery worries, but needs a socket within cable reach. Most plug-in outdoor lighting is IP44 at a minimum.
Rechargeable (USB or dock) — an internal battery is charged indoors (USB-C is standard) and the light runs cord-free outdoors for 6–12 hours. Ideal for garden table lamps and small portable lanterns. Daily-use friendly.
Battery-powered (replaceable cells) — AA, AAA or CR123 batteries. Simpler than rechargeable but less convenient in the long run. Best for seasonal or occasional-use applications where daily recharging is overkill.
Solar-powered — internal solar panel charges a battery during daylight, with LED output at night. Works well in summer; winter performance drops substantially. Suits decorative and occasional applications, not primary outdoor lighting.
Styles and formats
Portable table lamps — cord-free versions of indoor table lamps, rated for outdoor use. See exterior table lamps.
Portable floor lamps and uplights — taller floor-standing fittings for patio and terrace use. See exterior floor lamps.
Festoon and string lights — strings of bulbs on a plug-in or battery cable, for pergolas, fences and decorative use.
Lanterns and portable hanging lights — rechargeable hanging lanterns with handles or hooks, for hanging on pergolas, pot plants or garden hooks.
Spike and stake lights — battery or solar spike-mounted fittings for temporary border or planting accent.
Frequently asked questions
How long do rechargeable outdoor lamps last on a charge?
Typically 6–12 hours on a full charge, depending on brightness setting and battery size. Most rechargeable lamps have multiple brightness modes — lowest mode extends runtime significantly. Full recharge usually takes 4–6 hours via USB-C.
Are plug-in outdoor lights as bright as hardwired ones?
Yes — plug-in mains fittings run off the same 240V supply and can match the output of hardwired equivalents. Rechargeable and battery-powered lights are usually dimmer because of battery output constraints, which is fine for decorative and accent applications.
Do portable outdoor lights need to be IP-rated?
Yes, any outdoor fitting should be IP-rated — typically IP44 minimum. Check the product page. A rechargeable lamp used only on a covered outdoor table needs less rating than a plug-in festoon fully exposed to weather.
Can I leave plug-in outdoor lights out year-round?
Plug-in festoons and fittings rated IP65+ can usually stay out year-round. Rechargeable and battery lamps shouldn't — the batteries suffer in cold and wet conditions, and most are designed to come indoors between uses. Product pages specify weather-tolerance.
