Laura Ashley 2.5l Garden Collection Paint
Outdoor paint for sheds, fences and garden woodwork
2.5 litre Laura Ashley Garden Collection paint — formulated for exterior timber structures. Sheds, fences, trellises, benches, planters and garden buildings.
What Garden Collection paint is for
Garden Collection paint is specifically formulated for rougher outdoor timber surfaces that see heavy weather exposure but don't need the refined finish of exterior eggshell. The main applications:
Sheds and garden buildings — wooden sheds, greenhouses with wooden frames, summerhouses, garden offices, log stores.
Fencing — wooden fence panels, fence posts, gate frames.
Trellises and garden structures — plant support structures, pergolas, wooden archways.
Garden benches and furniture — wooden outdoor furniture needing weather protection.
Planters — wooden plant boxes, raised beds (where paint is exterior-only to the planting area), decorative containers.
Summerhouse and shed trim — window frames, doors and decorative trim on outdoor buildings.
How Garden Collection differs from exterior eggshell
Both are exterior paints, but they're formulated for different applications:
Garden Collection — thicker body, more coverage per coat, matt-to-low-sheen finish, designed for rough-sawn and planed timber. More forgiving on imperfect surfaces.
Exterior Eggshell — smoother body, refined finish, designed for smooth planed surfaces where finish quality matters (doors, window frames).
Rule of thumb: exterior eggshell for surfaces where the finish is visible and quality matters; Garden Collection for larger-scale structural paint on rougher timber.
Laura Ashley Garden Collection colours
The Garden Collection palette extends beyond interior paint colours to include specific outdoor-friendly tones:
Sage greens and soft greens — traditional garden shed colours that blend naturally with planting.
Dove greys and soft whites — light coastal-style garden building colours.
Deep blue-greens and teal — traditional country-house garden colours, particularly suited to Victorian-style structures.
Warm creams and off-whites — classic country garden tones.
Black and dark charcoal — modern country style for contemporary garden buildings.
Coordinate with the wider Laura Ashley palette if painting multiple outdoor structures, or if the garden building is visible from the house and you want tonal consistency.
Coverage
2.5 litres of Garden Collection paint covers roughly 30m² per coat on smooth planed wood, dropping to 20–25m² on rough-sawn timber (rough surfaces absorb more paint).
For reference:
Standard 2m x 2m garden shed — roughly 20m² of exterior surface (walls plus door plus trim). 2.5l covers one coat; plan for two coats minimum on new or previously-unpainted wood.
10m of standard fence panels — roughly 18m² of paintable area. One 2.5l tin covers a single coat; two coats requires two tins.
Summerhouse — typically 30–50m² exterior surface depending on size. Plan for 5–10 litres across two coats.
Preparation and application
Outdoor timber preparation:
Clean thoroughly — scrub with exterior timber cleaner to remove dirt, algae, mould and loose wood fibres. Allow 48 hours to dry in dry conditions.
Treat existing timber — pressure-treated timber usually needs no additional treatment. Untreated timber benefits from a wood preservative applied before the paint.
Prime rough-sawn timber — a primer or diluted first coat helps the top coats bond and reduces the total number of coats needed.
Apply in dry conditions — minimum 10°C, no rain forecast for 24 hours after painting.
Work in the direction of the grain — brush strokes running along wood grain give the best finish on rough timber.
Two coats minimum on new timber or very weathered surfaces. Touch-dry in 2 hours; fully recoatable after 4–6 hours in dry conditions.
Frequently asked questions
Can Garden Collection paint be used on pressure-treated timber?
Yes, on pressure-treated timber that's been outside for at least 6–12 months. Fresh pressure-treated timber still has surface moisture from the treatment process and paint doesn't adhere well. Wait for the initial weathering before painting.
How long does Garden Collection paint last outdoors?
Typically 3–7 years depending on exposure. South-facing and exposed surfaces need repainting sooner; sheltered positions last longer. Annual inspection for flaking or fading helps catch early wear.
Can I use Garden Collection paint on metal garden structures?
No — it's formulated for wood. For metal garden furniture, gates or railings, use a dedicated metal exterior paint with rust-inhibiting properties.
