Pendant
One pendant can change the whole room
The ceiling light is the first thing anyone notices when they walk in. Get it right and the room tells you what kind of place it is before you flick a switch.
Choosing the right pendant for your room
A pendant does more than light the space — it anchors the room visually, sets the mood, and often becomes the single design feature people comment on. That's why it's worth slowing down on the choice. The right pendant balances three things: the size of the room, the height of the ceiling, and the style of everything else in the space.
For a living room or bedroom, a single statement pendant works as the centrepiece. For a kitchen island or dining table, a bar pendant or a run of cluster pendants spreads light evenly across the length of the surface and creates a much more intentional look than a single light drowning in the middle.
Sizing the pendant to the space
A quick sizing rule that almost always holds: add the length and width of the room in metres, then use that number in inches as a rough guide for the pendant diameter. A 4m x 5m living room suits a pendant around 22cm–25cm in diameter. Anything smaller gets lost; anything much bigger starts to dominate.
For a pendant over a dining table, the shade diameter should be around 30cm narrower than the shortest side of the table. Hang the bottom of the shade 75–90cm above the tabletop — high enough not to block sightlines across the table, low enough to feel intentional.
Pendant styles and when each works
Single-light pendants are the workhorse of the category — one shade on one cord, easy to swap, forgiving on most ceilings. Our single light pendant range covers everything from minimal glass globes to heavy industrial metal.
Cluster pendants group three or more shades at varying drop lengths from a single ceiling rose. Great for stairwells, high-ceilinged living rooms and dining rooms where you want drama without running multiple cables. See the cluster pendant collection.
Bar pendants mount horizontally, usually with 3–5 lights running along the bar. Made for kitchen islands, dining tables and long hallways — bar pendants give even coverage that a single pendant can't.
Easy-fit pendants skip the hard wiring and clip straight onto an existing bulb holder. Ideal if you're changing the look without calling an electrician. Browse easy-fit pendants.
Feature and ringed pendants are the design-led end of the range — large statement pieces that become the first thing anyone notices. See feature pendants and ringed pendants.
Cord drop, ceiling height and installation
Most pendants arrive with a generous cord that can be shortened during installation. Standard drop lengths sit between 60cm and 150cm from ceiling to bottom of shade, but the right drop depends on ceiling height and what's underneath. A rough guide: leave at least 210cm clearance to the floor in walkways, 75–90cm above a dining or kitchen table, and match the lowest point to other pendants in the same room.
Pendants connect to a standard ceiling rose. If you're replacing an existing pendant like-for-like, the swap is straightforward with the power off at the consumer unit. If the existing rose is old, cracked, or you're moving from a single pendant to a cluster or bar, call an electrician — especially if the new fitting is heavier than the old one.
Bulbs, dimming and smart control
Most pendants take standard E27 or E14 bulbs, but check the product page before ordering. LED filament bulbs in warm white (2700K) are the most flattering for living rooms and dining spaces; cooler 3000K–4000K works better in kitchens and workspaces. Almost every pendant in this range is dimmable when paired with a dimmable LED and a compatible dimmer switch.
Smart bulbs fit straight into most pendants — they're slightly larger than standard LEDs, so check shade internal clearance on smaller fittings. For a fully connected room, see our smart pendant lights range where the pendant itself is app-controlled.
Frequently asked questions
How high should I hang a pendant over a dining table?
Aim for 75–90cm between the bottom of the shade and the tabletop. Higher and the light gets lost; lower and it blocks sightlines. If the ceiling is higher than 2.7m, lean towards the 90cm end; if lower, 75cm feels more comfortable.
Can I install a pendant myself?
Swapping a like-for-like pendant is a straightforward DIY job with the power off at the consumer unit. Installing a new pendant where there wasn't one before, or moving from a single to a multi-light fitting, should be done by a qualified electrician — especially if the new fitting is heavier or the existing rose needs replacing.
What's the difference between a cluster and a bar pendant?
A cluster pendant drops multiple shades from a single ceiling rose at varying lengths, giving a sculptural, vertical look. A bar pendant mounts several lights along a horizontal bar, giving even coverage along a length — ideal for kitchen islands and long tables. Clusters suit stairwells and high living rooms; bars suit kitchens and dining.
Will a dimmable pendant work with my existing dimmer switch?
Only if the switch is rated for LED loads. Older rotary dimmers designed for halogen or incandescent bulbs can cause LEDs to flicker, buzz or fail to dim smoothly. A modern trailing-edge LED dimmer paired with a dimmable LED bulb solves most of these issues.
How do I pick a pendant for a low ceiling?
For ceilings under 2.4m, a pendant with a short drop (30–50cm) works best, or consider a semi-flush fitting instead. Look for pendants sold with adjustable-drop cables, and avoid long cluster pendants or anything with a deep shade hanging low enough to bump a tall guest.
