Laura Ashley 5l Matt Emulsion Paint
Larger-volume interior wall paint
5 litre Laura Ashley matt emulsion — same formulation as the 2.5l size, larger tin for bigger rooms and whole-property projects. Covers roughly 60m² per coat at better per-m² value.
When 5l is the right size
The 5l tin offers better per-m² value than the 2.5l, so it's the right choice for any project where you'll use more than about 3 litres of a single colour. The main applications:
Larger rooms — a living room, principal bedroom or dining room with 40–50m² of wall area. Two 2.5l tins would work; one 5l tin is slightly cheaper and easier to handle as a single resource.
Whole-room two-coat projects — a standard 4m x 5m room with 2.4m ceilings needs roughly 45m² of paint per coat (with windows and doors deducted). 90m² across two coats is about 7.5l — a 5l plus a 2.5l, or two 5ls with spare.
Multiple rooms in the same colour — if you're painting several rooms the same colour (hallway plus stairwell plus landing, for example), buying a single 5l tin ensures colour consistency across rooms without worrying about slight batch differences.
Ceilings across multiple rooms — a common approach is to paint every ceiling in a property the same off-white or pale colour. A single 5l tin covers several standard ceilings.
Coverage from 5l
5l covers roughly 60m² per coat on smooth primed walls. Across two coats (the normal requirement), 5l covers about 30m² of wall area fully finished.
To put that in context:
5l covers approximately: a small-to-medium bedroom (two coats), a single large feature wall (two coats), a standard kitchen ceiling plus the surrounding walls above splashback height.
For a whole 4m x 5m bedroom: plan for 7.5–10l total (one 5l plus one 2.5l, or two 5ls for comfort plus touch-up reserve).
For a full hallway, stairwell and landing: typically 5–10l depending on ceiling heights and run length.
Everything else matches the 2.5l formulation
5l and 2.5l Laura Ashley matt emulsion are the same paint, just different volumes. Coverage per m², finish, drying time, colour palette, application method — all identical. The only practical differences:
Weight — a 5l tin is roughly double the weight of a 2.5l. Worth knowing for moving the tin around and for shelf storage.
Pot life after opening — a large tin opened and partly used can develop a skin on top faster than a smaller tin. Seal the lid tightly and store cool.
Per-m² value — 5l is usually 15–25% cheaper per m² than 2.5l. Worth it if you'll actually use the volume.
For full application guidance, coverage calculations and paint-prep advice, see the 2.5l matt emulsion page — all the same information applies.
Frequently asked questions
Is 5l matt emulsion different from 2.5l?
No — identical paint, just a larger tin. Pick based on the volume you need. Roughly: under 3 litres go with 2.5l tins; over 3 litres, 5l is better value.
How much will 5l cover?
Roughly 60m² per coat on smooth walls. Most walls need two coats, so 5l gives finished coverage of about 30m² of wall area.
Can I mix 5l and 2.5l tins of the same colour?
Yes — provided they're the same colour code and ideally the same batch. Mix them together in a large bucket before painting for colour consistency across the whole project.
