Smart Spotlights

Spotlights that do more than just point

Smart spotlights — surface-mount, adjustable and track systems — with full app, voice and scene control. Zone-by-zone brightness, colour-change mood lighting, and scheduling across a whole spotlight array.

Where smart spotlights make the biggest difference

Spotlights are directional — they aim light at specific targets. That makes them a perfect candidate for smart control because different spots often serve different jobs in the same room:

Over a kitchen island — the bar of spots needs to be bright cool-white for cooking and dim warm for evening. Tuneable white handles both from the same fitting.

Display and feature lighting — spotlights aimed at artwork, shelving or architectural features. Scene-controlled intensity lets the feature lighting be prominent during the day and subtle in the evening.

Directional task zones — two adjustable spots on a multi-head fitting, each aimed at a different zone (kitchen worktop + island, desk + bookshelf). Independent dimming of each zone via app.

Colour-change mood lighting — smart colour-change spotlights aimed at walls or architectural features give dramatic scene-based colour washing for entertainment and events.

Fixed, adjustable and track — all three work with smart control

Fixed smart spotlights — point down from a fixed mounting, controlled by app or voice. Simpler, usually with integrated LED. The right choice when the target is fixed (kitchen worktop, specific feature).

Adjustable-head smart spotlights — the head tilts and the smart layer adds app control over that positional fitting. Useful when the target might change over time.

Smart track systems — multiple smart spotlights on a track, individually addressable via app. The most flexible format. Reposition the physical fitting, zone-dim, scene-control — everything a non-smart track does, plus app and voice on top.

Multi-head smart bars — two to four smart spotlights on a single mounting base. Independent addressing of each head. Good for rooms where one fitting needs to cover multiple zones.

Zone control — the smart spotlight's best feature

Most smart spotlight arrays let you group and ungroup individual fittings in the app:

All-together control — the whole array dims or switches as one. "Kitchen off" switches every spotlight in the kitchen at once.

Zone-by-zone control — group spotlights into zones (e.g. "kitchen worktop zone" and "kitchen dining zone"). Dim or switch each zone independently for different times of day.

Individual control — each spot is its own addressable fitting. Useful for accent lighting where you want one spot on and the others off.

Most Wi-Fi smart spotlight systems handle all three levels natively in the companion app.

Smart fitting vs smart GU10 bulbs

For existing spotlight installations, smart GU10 bulbs are a cheap and quick upgrade. Swap the existing bulbs for smart GU10s and you get dimming, tuneable white and often colour-change without changing the fitting itself. The trade-off is slightly limited tuneable-white range compared to integrated smart fittings, and not all smart GU10s are fire-rated for recessed use — check the bulb's fire-rating before use in upstairs recessed fittings.

For new spotlight installations, integrated smart fittings are cleaner, with wider tuneable-white range and no separate bulb compatibility concerns.

Bathroom smart spotlights

Standard smart spotlights in this range are not IP-rated for bathrooms. For bathroom use, see the bathroom spotlight range — IP-rated fittings, some of which support smart bulb replacement for bathroom-appropriate smart control.

Wall switch and dimmer rules

Don't install smart spotlights on circuits with existing wall dimmers. Replace any wall dimmer with a plain on/off switch — dimming happens through the app, voice or smart dimmer replacement. Keep the wall switch on for normal use.

Frequently asked questions

Can I control individual spotlights in an array?

Yes. Most smart spotlight systems let each fitting be addressed individually, grouped into zones, or controlled all together via the app. The same fitting can belong to multiple groups (e.g. "kitchen" and "worktop zone") for flexible scene control.

Are smart spotlights dimmable?

All smart spotlights in this range are dimmable via app, voice or smart dimmer switch. Standard wall dimmers are not compatible — remove any dimmer from the circuit before installing a smart spotlight.

Can I use smart spotlights outside?

Only IP-rated smart exterior spotlights. Standard interior smart spotlights aren't weather-rated. For outdoor smart spotlights and floodlights, see the exterior smart lighting range.

Do smart GU10 bulbs work in fire-rated recessed fittings?

Some do, some don't — check the specific bulb's fire-rating spec. Not all smart GU10 bulbs are rated for fire-rated enclosed fittings, and using the wrong type compromises the ceiling's fire protection. For new installations where smart control matters, integrated smart recessed fittings (see smart recessed lights) are the safer specification.
