When a Tiffany semi-flush is the right choice

Tiffany semi-flush fittings occupy a specific place in the Tiffany range — they give you the decorative stained glass presence of a Tiffany shade, but on a short drop that suits rooms with standard ceiling heights.

The applications:

Standard-ceiling bedrooms — where a full Tiffany pendant would hang too low. Semi-flush gives the Tiffany character without crowding the room.

Hallways with 2.4m ceilings — the classic semi-flush position. Tiffany semi-flush adds warmth and character along a hallway without the headroom compromise of a pendant.

Small traditional living rooms — period properties with lower ceilings benefit from semi-flush Tiffany over pendant Tiffany. Still decorative, still characterful, but physically proportionate.

Landings and smaller entrance halls — where a full pendant would dominate the space.

Small dining rooms — over smaller dining tables in rooms where a full pendant Tiffany would feel heavy.

Semi-flush vs flush vs pendant Tiffany

Three related formats, chosen by ceiling height:

Flush Tiffany — sits tight against the ceiling with no drop. The right choice for ceilings under 2.4m.

Semi-flush Tiffany (this page) — 10–25cm drop. The default for standard 2.4–2.6m ceilings.

Pendant Tiffany — drop of 40cm+. Right for ceilings 2.6m and above.

If you're uncertain which format to pick, measure your ceiling height. 2.4m or below → flush. 2.4–2.6m → semi-flush. Above 2.6m → pendant.

Tiffany semi-flush shade styles

Most Tiffany semi-flush fittings use dome or bowl shades — rounded shapes that suit the close-to-ceiling mounting. The shade typically wraps around the bulb(s) from above, throwing light downwards into the room and subtly sideways onto the ceiling around the fitting.

Sizing

Size the shade to the room's floor area:

Small rooms (under 10m²) — 30–40cm shade diameter.

Medium rooms (10–20m²) — 40–50cm.

Larger rooms (20m²+) — 50–60cm or consider a pair of smaller semi-flush fittings spaced across the ceiling.

A useful sizing rule: add the room's length and width in metres, then use that number in inches as a rough diameter guide (a 4m x 5m room suits a 22–25cm shade).

Bulbs and output

Most Tiffany semi-flush fittings take one or two E27 bulbs; sometimes multiple smaller E14 bulbs for larger domed fittings. Warm white (2700K) LED filament bulbs are the right default.

Output should match the room's needs — 800–1500 lumens is typical for semi-flush fittings acting as primary ambient light. For accent-only applications, lower output is fine.

Installation

Tiffany semi-flush fittings install like any semi-flush ceiling fitting — wired to a standard ceiling rose, secured with the bracket provided. Installation is Part P-notifiable and should be done by an electrician. Weight matters — larger Tiffany semi-flush fittings can be substantial and need properly-rated ceiling fixings.
